Should I have my radar/Lidar calibrated or certified?
Radar and Lidar are certified, meaning that they display an accurate representation
of the speed and distance of the target vehicle. Calibration would be a determination of
the internal clocking intervals and any self-generated internal clocking. This has little
use in determining the accuracy of the radar/Lidar.
How often does a radar or Lidar require certification?
Vehicle code CVC40802 requires recertification at least every 3 years, NHTSA goes
along with this interval. Many jurisdictions have their equipment recertified yearly, for
inventory and some commissioners feeling this is too long.
I’ve heard that certification equipment doesn’t travel well. Is this true?
No. It travels about as well as a laptop computer.
What is the cost?
Certifications are currently $95 each, including Forks (if needed) and return shipping.
The price will rise slightly on 1/1/2025.
